The Hero Twins
The Twin Heroes, Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, are central figures in the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya. They are the children of Hun Hunahpú and were challenged by the gods of the underworld, Xibalbá. Through their intelligence and skills, they overcame difficult tests, defeated the lords of the underworld, and restored balance to the world. Their story symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and the cycle of life and death.
Artist: RAFAEL ZURDO
Born in Chuarrancho, Guatemala, in 1961, he began working in agriculture at the age of 8. During his childhood, he would accompany his father to the Motagua River, where he collected stones of various sizes and colors. It was during these moments that the idea was born in him that every stone has life, and he began to give special meaning to the ones he found. In 1978, through a relative who worked at Jade Maya, he was introduced to the first teachings about this stone, marking the beginning of his journey in jade artistry. This learning became the foundation for creating innovative designs that would later define his unique style. Between 1980 and 1985, he worked at Jade Maya, contributing to the legacy of the region's tradition and art.
