Mexicas
This sculpture is masterfully carved from Guatemalan jadeite and Princess Blue jade, combining high and low relief with matte and polished finishes. The piece is supported by a free-form apple-green jade base, enhancing its sculptural presence and balance.
Mexicas brings together powerful representations of the Mexica worldview: the Eagle as Huitzilopochtli, god of war, symbol of the sun and the bravery of Mexica warriors; Red Tezcatlipoca (Xipe Tótec), “Our Lord the Flayed One,” embodying renewal and the rebirth of spring after winter; Quetzalcóatl, the Feathered Serpent, revered as the benefactor and giver of life and knowledge; and Cipactli, the primordial crocodile whose sacrifice gave rise to the earth we inhabit. Together, these figures form a profound narrative of creation, transformation, sacrifice, and cosmic order.
