Mesoamerican
The sculpture represents the creation of humans according to the Popol Vuh. Inspired by the Former and Creator, Tepeu and Cucumatz, it tells the story of their attempts to shape the perfect man, first using earth, clay, and wood, until finally succeeding with maize, the sacred food of the Maya. This piece visually narrates their efforts to bring life to humanity. Perfection was reached with the creation of the man of maize, who could feed himself and honor his creators. The sculpture symbolizes the origin and identity of Mesoamerican peoples, where maize sustains not only the body but also the spirit.
