Tree of Life Plaque
This engraved plaque is an exact reproduction of Stelae 5 from Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico. It depicts the creation myth of the Maya. Their world has three dimensions: heaven, middle world of the Earth and dark waters of the Underworld.
Running through the center of this world, the Maya envisioned an axis called 'Wacah Chan' in the form of a tree. This symbolic tree was depicted with its roots plunged to the watery underworld, its trunk through the middle world and its branches soared to the heaven. The Maya called their stelae 'te-tuns' which means tree stones.
