Jaguars were considered to be a protectors of cacao plantations in the Olmec and Maya World. Jaguars were supernatural figures associated with the underworld.  People feared Jaguars and a Jaguar protecting a cacao plantation would frighten thieves. Jaguars were associated with caves, sacred portals to the underworld.
