The original of this mask was discovered in 1949 by a Mexican archaeologist, Alberto Ruz Lhuillier in the tomb of King Pakal in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico. The mask was found at the side of the king and it represents the Sun God who was chosen by King Pakal as his personal God because it represents wisdom and power.
