The quetzal plays an important role in various types of Mesoamerican mythology. It is the national bird of Guatemala, and its image is found on the country's flag and coat of arms. It also lends its name to the country's currency, the Guatemalan quetzal (abbreviation GTQ).
Not only does the quetzal represent freedom in the Mayan culture (as a species, they do not respond well to captivity) but quetzals are also one of the spirit guides, or nahual, of the Maya.
This statue also features a beautiful Lycaste Skinneri (orchid), also known as 'White Nun' (Monja Blanca), national flower of Guatemala.
