This replica is thought to be a portrait of Yakin Caan Chac, the 27th ruler in the succession of Tikal. His most imposing monument is the ponderous Temple IV, the largest structure in Tikal, situated about two-thirds of a kilometer west of the Great Plaza.
The great causeways may have been built during Yaxkin's reign. The date of Yaxkin Caan Chac's death is not known, but his tomb is thought to be Burial 196 under Structure 5D-73. The original cylindrical mosaic jar with the portrait lid, is housed in the Museo Nacional in Guatemala City.
