Jade Olmec Head
Tenango del Valle, Estado de Mexico
21.5 x 13 cm.
Middle Preclassic Period
This is a replica in fine jadeite jade of the original head which was found in a site called Tenango del Valle in Mexico. It dates to the Olmec culture and has distinct Olmec features, large head with cranial deformation, slanting eyes, flat nose and thick lips. The ears have perforations perhaps to hang objects of adornment. The original is housed in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
