The original of this figure is a Maya glyph found in one of their codices, called the Dresden Codex.
It is part of the Maya myth of the creation of humans which tells the following: "And then the grinding nine times. Food was mixed together with the water with which she rinsed her hands in order to create fat, and the result was man. The making and the modeling of our first mother and first father were from yellow and white corn for the flesh, for food and for human legs and arms. To our father was given the four human assignments".
