Ixchel is also known as the Maya Moon Goddess. In the Maya Codices there are two moon goddesses, one is Young and called “Goddess I” and represents the new moon medicine and giving birth. The second one is an old woman called “Goddess O” and she is companion of the God Itzamna. She represents the earth, plants and weaving. It is a universal belief that the moon regulates the life cycle and the tides, which help fertilize the Earth.
